Стиль Кьюкора нащупывает идеальное равновесие между легкостью подхода и ироничной сухостью; он умеет быть зрелищным даже при том, что действие разворачивается в серии замкнутых и, в конечном итоге, довольно суровых помещений. Выразительный слог, строгость и классическое мастерство позволяют Кьюкору избежать немотивированных ходов в фильме, который является прежде всего смелым вызовом и хитроумным аттракционом. Только мелодраматические моменты (сцены между Нормой Ширер и ее дочерью) ему не удаются и выглядят провальными.
